Creating Stock ID's
Previous Topic  Next Topic

Stock ID's form a major part of the system's functionality and it is imperative that a robust and easy to understand coding system is adopted throughout. The user must fully understand the way in which ID's are created based on the policies you set.

We will give you some examples on how to go about this but the final structure has to lie with the customer.

When using sizes in the ID, pad them out to the biggest possible size you will likely use. E.g. in round bar if 999mm is the maximum diameter then specifiy the size as 010 This way when listing ID's or making searches all the items listed will be in incremental order.

Examples Shape codes:

Angle Bar AB

Round Bar RB

Flat Bar FB

Hex Bar HB

Round Tube RT

Square Bar SB

Example Material Codes:

Steel S

Stainless Steel SS

Aluminium A

Brass B

Copper C

Cast Iron CI

Example Specifications:

Steel EN1A - EN1A

Aluminium 2011 - 2011

Stainless Steel 303 - 303

Example 1:

10mm Round Bar in Aluminium 6082

Breaking down the item we have

Size = 10mm

Profile = Round Bar

Specification = 6082

In no particular order using a 2 or 3 digit code for the profile RB (round bar), A 2 or 3 digit code for the material A (aluminium), the size expressed as 3 digits 010 and finally the specification 6082 we could derive a new stock id of

RBA 010  6082 with a description of Round Bar Aluminium 10mm Dia. 6082

You could use a - instead of spaces

This could then be repeated for all sizes upwards:

RBA 011  6082

ROUND BAR ALUMINIUM 011mm DIA   6082

RBA 012  6082

ROUND BAR ALUMINIUM 012mm DIA   6082

RBA 013  6082

ROUND BAR ALUMINIUM 013mm DIA   6082

RBA 014  6082

ROUND BAR ALUMINIUM 014mm DIA   6082

RBA 015  6082

ROUND BAR ALUMINIUM 015mm DIA   6082

RBA 016  6082

ROUND BAR ALUMINIUM 016mm DIA   6082

Example 2:

10 x 20 Flat Bar Stainless Steel 304

Using two digits for the profile FB (flat bar), 2 digits for the material SS (stainless steel), the size expressed as 010x020 and the specification 304 we could have something similar to the following examples:

FBSS 020 x 010 304

FLAT BAR STAINLESS STEEL 020mm x 010mm  304

FBSS 020 x 012 304

FLAT BAR STAINLESS STEEL 020mm x 012mm  304

FBSS 020 x 016 304

FLAT BAR STAINLESS STEEL 020mm x 016mm  304

FBSS 025 x 002 304

FLAT BAR STAINLESS STEEL 025mm x 002mm  304

FBSS 025 x 003 304

FLAT BAR STAINLESS STEEL 025mm x 003mm  304

FBSS 025 x 004 304

FLAT BAR STAINLESS STEEL 025mm x 004mm  304

Example 3:

12 x 40 Hex Bolt Tensile 12.9

M12HB12x40 12.9 or HBM12x40-12.9

Example 4:

Subcontract Items could all be prefixed with SC

SC-MPI Magnetic Particle Inspection

SC-DYPEN Dypen

SC-PLATE Plating
